January Musings

It has been a very full month.  We took the side wall off of James's crib since he started climbing in and out of it.  I remember writing about when John did the same thing.  How time flies!  Now I have two little alarm clocks that wake me in the mornings around 6:30.  I can't seem to figure out how to reprogram the time though, and there aren't any snooze buttons anywhere!  But they're cute and they make me laugh, so it's ok.

The weather has been warm for January, so we have been enjoying time outside.  Here is Button, sure to be an internet sensation:

He has been with us for twelve years.  Colton caught him for me when he was a wild kitten on the ranch.  He lived with us in town, and now he has come full circle back to the ranch.  He had gotten very sick recently, and Colton agreed to take him to the vet for me- proof of his love because he is not a cat person.  I am happy to report that Button has made a full recovery.  Do you see James's little boots in the background?  He is very gentle with the animals.

We are trying to sell our little flock of five Silkies.  We bought them by mistake, not knowing what they were.  They were in the clearance bin for $1 with all of the other chicks we bought.  Because that is a steal when it comes to chicks (they are about $4 each nowadays), we brought them home.  I do think they are pretty, but the roosters are mean to my big chickens.  They have plucked all of the tail feathers out of my big rooster!  They also live in our hatching pen, and I want my hatching pen back this spring, so they just need to go.

I am still trying to adjust to my new diet, but it hasn't been all bad.  We had some good friends give us- yes give us- some steak!  Colton selflessly cooked some of it up for me and I divided it into meal portions for myself.  I really can't complain.

I've also been eating lots of bacon and cabbage or homemade sausage with Brussels sprouts for breakfast.

A salad topped with salmon and a homemade Greek yogurt dressing:

Colton could not figure out why I was adding garlic powder and salt to my yogurt.

I cheated a couple times with gluten and sugar just to lift my spirits, as I am not allergic to those things- I just have to limit them.  I am about to start an 11 week "gut healing" program and I know both of those things will be off limits.  I start next month and I'm ready.

Since changing my diet, I have switched from coffee to herbal tea.  I do still have a cup of decaf every now and then, but nothing like the three to four cups of caffeine I had been drinking per day.  On the morning of our twelfth anniversary earlier this month, this is what I woke up to:

My gift was these tisane glasses, and Colton had set it all up with my tea pot and strainer and lit candles.  Isn't that romantic?  We like to watch BBC's detective series Poirot (from the 90s), and Poirot always drinks his herbal tea from glasses like these.  Now we have our own set.

I did hit a few rough patches this month, but I found encouragement in an unlikely place.  I was looking at my planner one evening to see what the month held, and I saw the notes I had written to the side of my calendar.  In the beginning of the month, I had prayed over what to fill the blank space in with, and when I read it, I knew the Lord's hand was in it:

~ Be inspired by your ideals but not disappointed by reality.

~  Count your blessings and focus on God's goodness.

~  Let Jesus direct your vision and remember that you have a sacred calling.

~  You have many things to care for in your home, but only 3 of them have souls.  They are eternal, and you are doing eternal work.

~ When things get tough: run, hide, hope, trust, and cling to Jesus. He is your Rock.

I hope these thoughts are a blessing to you, too.  What about you?  How was your January?

I will see you on Thursday for our next Thrifty Thursday post!

  1. Your 'tea set' looks practical and pretty! What a nice birthday surprise your hubby came up with, he must be very observant.

May I ask what kind of gut healing program you're going on?

I like to write quotes in my planner too and like you, I find it amazing how God uses those quotes at just the right time to encourage me.

    1. Thank you, Patsi! Those notes were Providential.
The gut healing program is called Gut Thrive in 5. It focuses on diet and a series of herbs and supplements designed to detox the body, improve liver function, heal the gut lining, and rebuild good gut bacteria. I'm hopeful that it will help. The reviews are really good.

  2. Yes, those thoughts were a huge blessing. Oh how many wives forget that their husbands need care. They are a precious gift to us and they have very tender hearts. I am glad to see you are getting your footing with your diet.

    1. Lana, I agree. Our husbands are precious and provide so much in the way of strength, stability, and love. They deserve to be top priority in our homes, not overlooked.

  3. Those side notes are beautiful, Kelsey! How wonderful to be outdoors with just a jacket in January. We’re starting a cold spell into the teens and low twenties here in northern lower Michigan. Happy anniversary! What a romantic gesture your husband provided.

    1. Thank you! Yes, Colton did a great job on my gift.
Teens and twenties! It very rarely gets that cold where I am. We usually have a cold spell here and there with warm days in between. I actually need to get out in my garden.
I hope you stay warm and keep those home fires burning!

  4. Happy anniversary and kudos to Colton for his thoughtfulness. As I read your side notes they were such a blessing to me today. Thank you for sharing them. Where does the time fly with our kiddoes? The boys are sure growing up. I feel certain you're enjoying every milestone in their lives. Was wondering which gut healing protocol you will be following.

    1. I'm glad the notes were a blessing to you too, Cookie.
Yes, time does fly! All of the things James is going through take me back to when John was his age, and it doesn't seem that long ago. They just grow so fast.
The gut healing program is called Gut Thrive in 5. It was a little pricey, but it focuses on diet and supplements added in at specific times in a specific order to detox and then repopulate the good bacteria. I'm in the introduction phase right now, so I haven't delved into the specifics yet. But the reviews are really good.

  5. Dear Kelsey,
I am absolutely delighted to be your new follower! Your blog is such a lovely space!
Happy wedding anniversary to you and your husband! What a thoughtful gift he got for you. I must say, I would have a hard time giving up my caffeine, but with such pretty tea things, perhaps it would be a possibility... May all go well with your diet change..
Your little one is so precious - my little boy also adores animals. We are hoping to get a cat sometime this year.
I love this note that you shared, "You have many things to care for in your home, but only 3 of them have souls. They are eternal, and you are doing eternal work." Such a good reminder for me because I get so hung up on keeping a tidy home! Almost impossible with a husband who works from home, a toddler and a Border Collie! We also live on a farm...
Love and blessings to you and thank you for your sweet note on my most recent post...it was so lovely hearing from you!

    1. Oh Kelly-Anne, I am so happy you are here! Thank you for your kind words. 💕 It was very difficult to quit caffeine and coffee in general, and I definitely went through some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms! I had never been a hot tea drinker until a friend introduced me to a particular tea company. Ironically, I've always loved tea cups, so I was prepared with my little collection. Now I am happy they can be put to use, and yes, pretty things do help!
I hope you are able to get a cat this year. I think your little boy would love it! It is so fun to watch little ones delight in animals.
As for the quote above, that is actually a sentiment I came across back when I was active on Instagram a couple years ago. I can't remember who shared it (or I would give them proper credit) but it had such a profound effect on me and it has never left me. I have to remind myself those things from time to time, because like you, I do enjoy a tidy home. My mind is more at ease when things are neat and orderly. But we also have to embrace the season we are in and give ourselves grace, knowing that simply loving and caring for our family in the way that they need it at the moment, is of greater importance.
Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope to see you again!

  6. Happy 12th anniversary and I love those tisane glasses! Colton was a sweet, sweet man!
Your cats are so pretty and it is so cute to see John petting the kittie!
About your healthy diet, those meals look delicious and I'm sure you will create your own routine and prefered meals in no time. Praying for you!
Finally, readings those little quotes made me feel more thankful and remember that if I'm alive today, is because God loves me and I have to treasure it.
    :)
